Hyakinthos is a figure of Greek mythology generally associated with youth and beauty. In traditional mythology, Hyakinthos is often depicted as a handsome young man loved by the gods Apollo and Zephyrus (also known as the West Wind).
According to the myths, Hyakinthos was a mortal prince and a skilled athlete who enjoyed spending his time outdoors, particularly engaging in discus throwing. Apollo, the god of music, poetry, and the sun, became infatuated with Hyakinthos and tried to gain his affection by teaching him arts and music. Zephyrus, the West Wind, also fell in love with Hyakinthos and vied for his attention.
However, tragedy struck when Apollo and Hyakinthos were playing a friendly game of discus. As Apollo threw the discus, Zephyrus, fueled by jealousy and anger, intentionally blew a gust of wind to alter the discus' trajectory. Tragically, the discus struck Hyakinthos, killing him instantly.
In mourning, Apollo transformed the spilled blood of Hyakinthos into a flower, which is known as the hyacinth. This flower became a symbol of beauty, sadness, and the ephemeral nature of life. Additionally, Apollo commemorated Hyakinthos by holding annual games, known as the Hyacinthia, in his honor.
