HSAS stands for Homeland Security Advisory System. It is a color-coded scale used in the United States to provide guidance on the current risk of terrorist attacks or other threats to national security. The HSAS was first introduced in 2002 by the Department of Homeland Security to keep the public informed about the level of threat and to enable appropriate response measures.
The advisory system is composed of five color-coded threat levels, namely Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, and Green. Each level represents a different degree of risk and is determined based on intelligence and analysis from various agencies. The levels indicate the probability of an attack occurring and the necessary protective measures to be taken.
The highest level, Red, indicates a severe risk of terrorist attacks, with strict security measures and possible restrictions on movement and transportation. The next level is Orange, which represents a high risk, followed by Yellow, indicating an elevated risk. The lowest levels, Blue and Green, represent a general risk and a low risk, respectively.
The purpose of HSAS is to provide a clear and widely understood system to help federal, state, and local government officials, as well as the public, make informed decisions regarding possible threats to homeland security.
