The Holy Roman Empire was established in 800 when Charlemagne, the King of the Franks and Lombards, was crowned Emperor by Pope Leo III. Its rulers sought to evoke the ancient Roman Empire, hence the term "Holy Roman Empire."
The HRE was characterized by a unique political structure where the Emperor held authority over a collection of semi-autonomous territories ruled by vassals and local nobles. This system was known as feudalism. The Emperor's power was limited and often contested by territorial princes, bishops, and other nobles.
Throughout its history, the Holy Roman Empire faced frequent conflicts and challenges that impacted its territorial and political unity. It was involved in numerous wars with neighboring states and faced internal religious, dynastic, and territorial disputes.

Moreover, its dissolution in 1806 following pressures from the Napoleonic Wars marked an important turning point in European history, giving rise to the modern nation-states of Central Europe.
