In hemisporosis, the spore-forming structures, known as sporangia, produce spores that are divided or split into two unequal halves. This unique characteristic sets hemisporosis apart from other types of sporulation observed in fungi. The larger half of the spore is generally referred to as the macronucleus, while the smaller half is termed the micromonokaryon.
The phenomenon of hemisporosis has been observed in different fungal groups, such as the family Mucoraceae within the order Mucorales. It is considered to be a variation of asexual spore production, allowing fungi to reproduce and spread their genetic material.
