Hellers test is a medical examination and diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the presence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients. This test aims to determine if there is abnormal esophageal motility or any potential obstruction in the esophagus by measuring the discomfort or pain experienced by the patient during the procedure.
During the Hellers test, a small, flexible tube called a catheter is carefully inserted through the nose and into the esophagus. This catheter is equipped with a pressure sensor at its tip. By gradually withdrawing the catheter, the physician can measure the pressure exerted by the muscles of the esophagus as it contracts and relaxes during swallowing.
To administer the test, the patient is usually given a numbing spray or anesthetic to minimize any discomfort or gag reflex. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Throughout the test, patients are often asked to report any sensations of pain, discomfort, or pressure as the catheter moves through the esophagus.
By measuring the pressure changes in the esophagus, Hellers test helps in the evaluation and diagnosis of conditions like achalasia (a disorder of the esophageal muscles resulting in difficulty swallowing) or other motility disorders. It helps physicians identify the presence of abnormal muscle function, obstruction, or anatomical abnormalities that may be causing symptoms related to reflux disease.
