H D antigens, also known as Duffy antigens, are a group of proteins found on the surface of red blood cells. They play a crucial role in the human immune system by determining an individual's blood type and mediating the body's response to certain infections.
The H D antigens are encoded by the DARC gene, located on chromosome 1. There are two main types of H D antigens: Fya and Fyb. These antigens exhibit varying expression patterns in different populations, with Fya more commonly found in individuals of Caucasian descent and Fyb more prevalent in individuals of African or Asian origin.
The presence or absence of H D antigens on red blood cells influences an individual's susceptibility to certain diseases. For example, individuals lacking the H D antigen (Fy(a-b-)) are resistant to infection by the Plasmodium vivax parasite, which causes malaria, as the parasite relies on the H D antigens to invade red blood cells. Conversely, individuals expressing the H D antigens (Fy(a+b+)) are more susceptible to infection by Plasmodium vivax.
H D antigens also have significance in blood transfusion compatibility. For example, individuals with different H D antigen profiles may require matched blood types to prevent adverse reactions during transfusion. Testing for H D antigens is an important component of blood typing procedures and plays a crucial role in ensuring safe and effective blood transfusions.
