The term is derived from the Lombard language's gastald or gastoldi, which means "district principal" or "district head." A guastald was an appointed official who governed a guastaldia, the territory under their jurisdiction.
A guastald's role encompassed various responsibilities, including administrative, military, and judicial matters. They acted as the representative of the central authority, often the King or Holy Roman Emperor, and were entrusted with the task of maintaining order and security within their assigned territory.
Typically, a guastald was appointed for life or until their legitimate authority was revoked. They oversaw the administration of justice, assessed taxes, and resolved disputes within their jurisdiction. Additionally, the guastalds had the task of organizing the military defense, collecting levies for the host army when required, and ensuring public safety.
Guastalds operated in a hierarchical structure, with several administrative levels within the feudal system. They reported to higher-ranking officials such as counts or dukes, who, in turn, reported to the monarch or their appointed representative.
