The grass itch mite, also known as the straw itch mite, is a microscopic arachnid belonging to the family Pyemotidae. It is commonly found in grassy areas and can cause an irritating skin condition known as "grass itch" or "straw itch" in humans and animals alike.
These mites are typically tan or reddish-brown in color and measure about 0.3 millimeters in length. While they primarily inhabit grasses, they may also be found on other vegetation, such as straw or hay. The female mites lay their eggs inside the plant material, and after hatching, the larvae crawl onto human or animal skin in search of a blood meal.
Upon contact with the skin, the larvae inject enzymes that dissolve the skin cells, allowing them to feed on the resulting fluid. This feeding process can lead to intense itching, redness, and small, red, or purple bumps on the affected area. The symptoms may appear within a few hours after exposure and can persist for several days.
Contrary to popular belief, grass itch mites do not burrow into the skin, but rather cause a superficial irritation. The condition is usually self-limiting, meaning it resolves on its own without treatment. However, to alleviate symptoms, over-the-counter antihistamines and anti-itch creams may be used.
Prevention of grass itch mite bites involves minimizing exposure to infested grass or straw, using insect repellents when outdoors, and wearing protective clothing. Regularly washing clothing and showering after potential exposure to these mites may also help prevent infestation.
