The term "Gomarite" refers to a member or follower of the strict conservative faction within Dutch Calvinism known as the "Gomarists". This religious group emerged during the Dutch Reformation in the late 16th century and took its name from Franciscus Gomarus, a prominent Dutch theologian and professor at the University of Leiden.
Gomarites adhered strictly to the teachings of John Calvin and vigorously opposed any form of compromise or liberal interpretation of the Reformed faith. They strongly advocated the doctrine of predestination, viewing it as an essential tenet of Calvinism that emphasized God's sovereignty and the absolute power of divine will in determining salvation. Gomarites also upheld the belief in the depravity of human nature and asserted the importance of upholding the strict standards of the Westminster Confession of Faith.
As a result of their theological convictions, Gomarites engaged in doctrinal disputes and clashes with the more moderate Arminians within the Dutch Reformed Church, particularly during the Synod of Dort in the early 17th century. This conflict centered around the issues of predestination, free will, and the nature of grace, and ultimately led to the formal division of the Dutch Reformed Church into two separate factions: the Gomarites (or Contra-Remonstrants) and the Arminians (or Remonstrants).
In modern usage, the term "Gomarite" is primarily found in historical and theological contexts and refers to those who staunchly adhere to conservative Calvinism and prioritize the strict interpretation of Reformed doctrine.
