The Global Positioning System, commonly referred to as GPS, is a navigational system that utilizes a network of satellites to determine the precise location and time of any given object or individual on the surface of the Earth. It consists of a constellation of at least 24 satellites orbiting the planet, set up by the United States Department of Defense.
GPS functions through a process known as trilateration, where a GPS receiver on the Earth's surface communicates with at least four of these satellites to calculate the precise position of the receiver. The signal transmitted by the satellites contains information about their position and current time. By measuring the time it takes for the signal to reach the receiver, the distance between the receiver and each satellite can be determined. By combining these distance measurements from multiple satellites, the exact location of the receiver can be determined.
The system's applications are numerous and varied, including navigation in air, land, and sea transportation, surveying and mapping, search and rescue operations, and even in smartphone-based location services. In addition to providing positioning information, GPS receivers are also capable of providing velocity and time synchronization.
