Gland cells are typically found in organs known as glands, which are specialized structures designed for the secretion of these substances. Exocrine glands secrete their products through ducts that lead to an external surface or a body cavity, such as the sweat glands, salivary glands, or mammary glands. Gland cells are characterized by their ability to synthesize specific molecules and package them into secretory granules or vesicles. These vesicles are then released from the gland cell through a process called exocytosis when stimulated by various factors, such as hormonal signals, nerve impulses, or changes in the environment.
The secretions of gland cells play crucial roles in regulating numerous bodily functions, including metabolism, growth, reproduction, digestion, immune response, and maintaining homeostasis. Dysfunction or abnormal growth of gland cells can lead to various diseases and conditions, such as hormonal imbalances, cysts, tumors, or infections.
