Born in Savigliano, Italy, Schiaparelli dedicated his life to studying the planets, with a special focus on Mars. He conducted extensive observations of the Martian surface, meticulously charting and documenting his findings. In 1877, he famously claimed the existence of linear features on Mars, which he interpreted as "canali" meaning "channels" in Italian. However, this term was mistakenly translated as "canals" in English, leading to a widespread belief in the existence of artificially constructed canals on Mars.
