GII stands for Gender Inequality Index. It is a quantitative measurement developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to assess and compare gender inequalities between countries. The GII takes into account three key dimensions of gender inequality: reproductive health, empowerment, and labor market participation.
The reproductive health dimension considers maternal mortality rates and adolescent birth rates, reflecting women's access to reproductive health services and their overall well-being. The empowerment dimension is based on indicators such as the share of parliamentary seats held by females and the educational attainment of women, reflecting their level of participation and representation in societal and political spheres. Lastly, the labor market dimension measures the gender disparity in economic participation and opportunity, taking into consideration the female-to-male ratio of economic participation and the gender gap in income earned.
The GII combines these three dimensions into a composite index, which is then ranked to provide an assessment of gender inequality on a global scale. A higher value on the GII indicates a higher level of gender inequality within a country.
