Giant hives refer to extremely large and prominent swellings or welts that appear on the surface of the skin as a result of an allergic reaction. Also known as angioedema, giant hives are characterized by their significant size, often measuring several inches in diameter. These hives are distinct from the typical urticaria (commonly called hives) as they involve a deeper layer of the skin, known as the dermis, in addition to the epidermis.
Giant hives are typically accompanied by intense itching, redness, and can cause a burning sensation or tenderness. These raised welts can emerge rapidly and may last for a few hours to several days before gradually fading away. They commonly appear on the face, lips, hands, feet, and genital areas, but they may also manifest in other parts of the body.
Common triggers for giant hives include certain foods, medications, insect stings, infections, exposure to extreme temperatures, stress, and autoimmune disorders. These triggers can cause the release of histamine and other chemicals in the body, leading to the dilation of blood vessels and the accumulation of fluid beneath the skin's surface, resulting in the formation of giant hives.
To alleviate the symptoms of giant hives, antihistamine medications are commonly used to reduce itchiness, redness, and swelling. However, in severe cases, additional treatments such as corticosteroids or other immunosuppressant drugs may be prescribed. It is advisable to seek medical attention if giant hives persist, worsen, or are accompanied by difficulty breathing, chest tightness, or other concerning symptoms.
