It refers to an official or high-ranking individual who exercises administrative, judicial, or executive authority over a designated area or jurisdiction during the early medieval period in England.
In the Anglo-Saxon society, the gerefa held a position of great responsibility and power, typically appointed by a lord or ruler to manage the affairs of a particular region, village, or estate.
