George Sisler was an American professional baseball player who was born on March 24, 1893, and passed away on March 26, 1973. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest first basemen in the history of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Sisler spent the majority of his career playing for the St. Louis Browns from 1915 to 1927, and later played for the Washington Senators and Boston Braves. He was known for his exceptional fielding skills, impressive speed on the basepaths, and his remarkable ability to hit for both average and power.
As a left-handed batter, Sisler was renowned for his outstanding hitting abilities. He possessed extraordinary hand-eye coordination and consistently achieved high batting averages, earning him the nickname "Gorgeous George." In fact, he became the first player in MLB history to reach the coveted 200-hit mark in multiple seasons, accomplishing this feat on six separate occasions.
Sisler's career was unfortunately curtailed by a debilitating illness, which caused him to miss the entire 1923 season. Despite returning to the game, he never fully regained his previous level of play. Nevertheless, Sisler's contributions to baseball were recognized when he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.
