George Gordon Meade was an American army officer and Union general during the American Civil War. He was born on December 31, 1815, in Cádiz, Spain, and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Meade is best known for his role as the commander of the Army of the Potomac, leading the Union forces to victory in the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
