Gallex is a term that represents one of the most significant experiments in the field of solar neutrino research. The acronym GALLEX, standing for Gallium Experiment, refers to an experiment conducted at the underground laboratory in Gran Sasso, Italy, designed to detect neutrinos emitted by the sun.
Neutrinos are subatomic particles with negligible mass and no electric charge that are produced as a result of nuclear reactions, such as those occurring in the sun. The GALLEX experiment aimed to observe and measure the flux of solar neutrinos by using a target made of liquid gallium to capture these elusive particles. Gallium has the unique property of resonantly absorbing neutrinos produced in the sun, providing a feasible way to study these particles.
