Fucine Lake is a large, natural, freshwater lake located in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. Also known as Lake Fucino, it is situated in the Fucine Basin, a wide plain surrounded by the Apennine Mountains. The lake has a rich history and has been the subject of significant human intervention over the centuries.
Originally covering an area of approximately 140 square kilometers, Fucine Lake was drained in the late 19th century, as its frequent flooding caused problems for the agricultural lands in the surrounding regions. This drainage was achieved through the construction of a complex system of canals, tunnels, and underground drains which divert the water into the Sangro River. The reclaimed land is now used for farming, making it a highly productive area.
Fucine Lake also holds cultural and historical significance. It was once the location of ancient civilizations, particularly the Marsi people who lived in the area during Roman times. The Roman Emperor Claudius attempted to drain the lake in the 1st century AD, but it was not successfully fully drained until the 19th century.

Despite its diminished size, the lake remains an important habitat for various species of birds, and its picturesque landscape draws tourists and nature enthusiasts. The word "fucine" is derived from the Latin word "fucinus", which refers to a type of freshwater fish called "freye" in Latin. "Freye" is also the origin of the Italian word "frega", which means "minnow". The name "Fucine Lake" most likely comes from the abundance of these freshwater fish in the lake, which is located in the region of Abruzzo, Italy.
