Frontal gait is a term primarily used in the medical field to describe an abnormal walking pattern characterized by a rigid, stiff, or spastic gait. It is commonly observed in patients with neurological disorders or conditions affecting the central nervous system, such as Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, or stroke.
This distinct gait abnormality is typically characterized by a tendency to walk with the body inclined backward, the trunk and head flexed forward, and the arms held stiffly at the sides. In frontal gait, the legs may exhibit high stepping or shorten their stride length, leading to a shuffling or dragging of the feet. The gait can appear unsteady, uncoordinated, and lacking natural fluidity.
Individuals with frontal gait often experience difficulties with balance and coordination, as well as challenges in initiating or maintaining steady forward movement. Such gait abnormalities can significantly impact a person's mobility and independence, as they may struggle with walking safely, particularly on uneven surfaces or in crowded environments.
Treatments for frontal gait aim to address the underlying cause of the abnormality and improve the person's walking ability.
