Fluorescent lighting consists of a long, narrow glass tube that contains a low-pressure mixture of gases, primarily argon and mercury vapor. This glass tube is coated on the inside with a phosphor material that emits visible light when energized by an electrical current.
When the electrical current is applied to the lamp, it excites the mercury vapor inside, causing it to emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This UV radiation then strikes the phosphor coating, triggering a phenomenon called fluorescence. The phosphor absorbs the UV radiation and re-emits the absorbed energy as visible light.
The light produced by fluorescent lamps is generally cooler and whiter compared to traditional incandescent bulbs. They are known for their energy efficiency and long lifespan, making them a popular choice for many lighting applications. Additionally, fluorescent lights emit significantly less heat compared to incandescent bulbs.
