FHES stands for Future Homemakers of Eight Schools, an educational program for high school students in the United States. Established in the 1940s, FHES aimed to promote knowledge and skills related to home economics and prepare students for careers in homemaking and related fields. Initially targeted towards females, FHES later became open for both genders to encourage a broad range of students to participate.
The FHES program involved various activities and classes that taught students essential life skills, such as cooking, sewing, budgeting, child development, nutrition, and home management. Students who joined FHES had the opportunity to develop practical skills that would be useful both in their personal lives and future careers.
Throughout the academic year, FHES chapters organized community service projects, fundraisers, and social events that encouraged team building and leadership development. Students were encouraged to participate in local, regional, and national competitions, where they could showcase their achievements in different home economics disciplines.
The FHES program aimed to empower students to have a positive impact on their families and communities through the application of home economics knowledge. Over time, the FHES program evolved and transformed into other organizations, such as Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), which expanded its scope to encompass a broader range of career and technical education pathways beyond just homemaking.
