FAB classification refers to a system used to categorize and classify types of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) based on certain distinct characteristics observed in the leukemia cells. AML is a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood, causing an abnormal increase in immature white blood cells.
The FAB classification was developed by the French-American-British Cooperative Group and introduced in the 1970s as a standardized system for predicting patient outcomes and determining appropriate treatment strategies. This classification system divides AML into eight subtypes (M0-M7) based on the unique features and appearance of the leukemia cells under a microscope.
Each subtype is characterized by specific morphological, immunological, and cytochemical properties observed in the leukemia cells. For instance, subtypes M1 and M2 are known as myeloblastic leukemias and are further distinguished by specific markers and characteristics associated with the cells' differentiation status. Subtype M3, known as acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), is characterized by the presence of an abnormality known as the PML-RARA fusion gene.

It helps determine the aggressiveness of the disease, predict prognosis, and guide the appropriate course of treatment, such as chemotherapy regimens or bone marrow transplantation.
