Erythroxylum, also known as coca, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Erythroxylaceae. It consists of approximately 250 species, which are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
Erythroxylum plants are small trees or shrubs that usually grow up to 13 feet in height, although some species can reach up to 60 feet. The leaves are simple and alternate, and the flowers are small and inconspicuous. Fruits are typically small, round, and contain one or two seeds.
The most well-known species within the Erythroxylum genus is Erythroxylum coca, commonly referred to as the coca plant. This species is native to the Andean region of South America and is primarily cultivated for its psychoactive alkaloids, especially cocaine. The leaves of the coca plant have been used for thousands of years by indigenous peoples for their stimulating and medicinal properties.
