Enver Hoxha (1908-1985) was an Albanian politician who served as the leader of Albania for more than four decades. He held the positions of First Secretary of the Albanian Party of Labor (later renamed the Party of Labor of Albania) from 1941 to 1985, as well as Prime Minister and President of Albania during various periods. Hoxha is known for establishing a totalitarian regime in Albania that isolated the country from the rest of the world for many years.
Under Hoxha's leadership, Albania followed a strict communist ideology and pursued a policy of self-reliance. He implemented a series of repressive measures, including banning all opposition parties and imprisoning or executing political dissidents. Hoxha's government established a pervasive system of control, resulting in limited personal freedoms and extensive state surveillance.
Internationally, Hoxha pursued a policy of non-alignment and promoted an isolationist approach for Albania. He distanced the country from the Soviet Union following the Sino-Soviet split, aligning Albania with Maoist China instead.
