An elevon refers to a control surface commonly employed on various aerospace vehicles, particularly aircraft and missiles. Acting as both an elevator and an aileron, it combines the functions of elevator movement (pitch control) and aileron movement (roll control) into a single unit. This versatile component typically consists of two interconnected flight control surfaces, usually located on the trailing edge of the wing or stabilizer, forming a V-shape. Through its integrated design, elevons enable the manipulation of both pitch and roll moments, allowing for efficient control and maneuverability.
When an elevon moves in a symmetric manner, most often as a result of a pilot's control input, it adjusts the aircraft's pitch by increasing or decreasing the lift created by the wings. Conversely, when the elevon moves asymmetrically, it produces differential lift, thereby inducing a rolling motion in the aircraft. By precisely manipulating the elevons together, pilots can execute a variety of aerial maneuvers, including banking, climbing, descending, and changing direction.
