Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ) is an extremist Islamist organization based in Egypt. The group was formed in the late 1970s with the primary objective of overthrowing the Egyptian government and establishing an Islamic state. It is considered one of the most influential militant organizations in Egypt, known for its radical ideology and involvement in numerous acts of violence.
EIJ follows a strict interpretation of Sunni Islam and its members advocate the implementation of Sharia law. They reject the legitimacy of secular governments and view them as impure and corrupt. The group believes in armed revolution as a means to achieve their goals and endorses violent tactics, including suicide bombings, assassinations, and attacks against both military and civilian targets.
Led by prominent figures such as Ayman al-Zawahiri and Mohammed Shawki al-Islambouli, EIJ gained notoriety for their involvement in the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981. They also played a significant role in the Egyptian Islamist insurgency during the 1990s, engaging in numerous violent acts targeting Egyptian security forces and civilians.
EIJ aligned itself with Al-Qaeda in the late 1990s, merging with the group and becoming one of its core elements. The alliance brought international attention to EIJ, as they participated in high-profile attacks, including the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.
As a result of increased government crackdowns, internal divisions, and the death or capture of key leaders, EIJ's influence and activities have declined in recent years. However, it remains a significant part of Egypt's militant landscape and continues to pose a threat to the country's security and stability.
