EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation, which is a technology used in internal combustion engines. It refers to a system that redirects a portion of the engine's exhaust gases back into the intake manifold. The primary purpose of EGR is to reduce the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx), a group of harmful pollutants produced during the combustion process.
When EGR is employed, a valve opens to allow a controlled amount of exhaust gases to enter the intake manifold. The addition of these inert gases into the combustion chamber reduces the concentration of oxygen available for combustion, resulting in a decrease in peak flame temperature. This temperature reduction is crucial as it helps mitigate the formation of NOx, which is particularly harmful to the environment and contributes to smog and the creation of acid rain.
In addition to reducing NOx emissions, EGR can also provide other benefits. It helps improve fuel efficiency by reducing the need for excessive fuel enrichment to cool down the combustion temperature. Furthermore, EGR can prevent engine knock, a phenomenon caused by high temperatures and pressures that can damage the engine.
