Ectoprocta, also known as Bryozoans or moss animals, are a phylum within the animal kingdom characterized by small, colonial organisms that primarily live in marine environments. The word "ectoprocta" is derived from the Greek words "ektos," meaning outside, and "proktos," meaning anus, reflecting one of their distinctive features - the anus is located outside the ring of tentacles surrounding the mouth.
Ectoprocts exist as tiny, filter-feeding animals that form colonies by secreting calcified structures called zooids, which are connected together. Each zooid within the colony has a feeding tentacle crown, known as the lophophore, used to capture tiny particles such as plankton from the surrounding water. The colony structure provides protection against predators and the ability to thrive in various aquatic habitats.
These organisms exhibit a wide range of morphologies, from branching forms that resemble moss to encrusting forms covering hard substrates. They can be found in freshwater and marine ecosystems worldwide, from shallow coastal waters to the deep sea.
