Early infantile autism, also known as infantile autism or childhood autism, is a lifelong developmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction, communication, and repetitive patterns of behavior. It is considered a form of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically manifests within the first few years of life, before the age of three.
Individuals with early infantile autism often struggle with social interactions, having difficulty with understanding and responding appropriately to nonverbal cues, maintaining eye contact, and forming meaningful relationships. Repetitive behaviors and limited interests are another key characteristic of early infantile autism. These may include repetitive movements like hand flapping or body rocking, strict adherence to routines or rituals, fascination with specific objects or topics, and resistance to changes in their environment or daily schedule.
While the exact cause of early infantile autism is not yet fully understood, it is believed to be influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There is currently no known cure for early infantile autism, but various interventions and therapies, such as behavioral therapy, speech therapy, and educational support, can help improve communication skills, social interactions, and overall quality of life for individuals with the condition.
