Dutch Elm Fungus, scientifically known as Ophiostoma ulmi, is a highly destructive and invasive fungal pathogen that primarily affects elm trees. It is responsible for Dutch Elm Disease, a devastating disease that has decimated countless populations of elm trees across Europe, North America, and other parts of the world.
The fungus is predominantly spread by bark beetles, specifically the European elm bark beetle (Scolytus multistriatus) and the native elm bark beetle (Hylurgopinus rufipes). These beetles burrow into the bark of infected trees, carrying the spores of the fungus with them. Once inside the tree, the fungus rapidly spreads, clogging the water-conducting vessels and obstructing the flow of nutrients. This leads to the wilting and eventual death of the tree.
The symptoms of Dutch Elm Disease include yellowing and drooping of leaves, followed by a progressive wilting and browning of branches. The disease can kill infected trees within a matter of months or years, depending on the severity of the infection. Over time, the fungus also produces distinctive dark brown or black streaks on the wood, known as "vascular discoloration."
Efforts to combat Dutch Elm Fungus and its associated disease have included the removal and destruction of infected trees, as well as the implementation of insect control measures to prevent the spread of the bark beetles. Additionally, genetic resistance in certain elm tree cultivars has been developed to mitigate the impact of the fungus.
