DMA, or Direct Memory Access, is a computer hardware feature that allows data to be transferred directly between peripheral devices and the computer's memory without involving the central processing unit (CPU). It is a technique used to increase the efficiency of data transfers and relieve the CPU from the burden of managing data movement tasks.
In DMA, a special-purpose chip called the DMA controller is utilized to coordinate the data transfer. When a peripheral device, such as a hard disk drive or a network interface card, wants to transfer data to or from the computer's memory, it sends a request to the DMA controller. The DMA controller then takes control of the memory bus and transfers the data directly between the device and memory, bypassing the CPU.
