A deviated nasal septum refers to a condition in which the nasal septum, the vertical wall of bone and cartilage that separates the nostrils, is misaligned or not straight. This misalignment can cause one nasal passage to be narrower than the other, leading to various nasal complications.
Typically, the nasal septum is slightly off-center for most individuals, but a deviated septum is considered significant when it affects breathing or causes other noticeable symptoms. This condition can occur naturally or result from nasal trauma or injury.
Symptoms of a deviated nasal septum may vary in severity and often include difficulty breathing through the affected nostril(s), frequent nasal congestion or blockage, recurrent sinus infections, or frequent nosebleeds. As airflow is disrupted, it can lead to snoring, sleep apnea, or loud breathing during sleep. Additionally, some individuals may experience facial pain, headaches, or postnasal drip.
Diagnosis of a deviated nasal septum is typically performed by an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist) who may examine the nasal passages using a nasal endoscope or other imaging tests like a CT scan. Treatment options for a deviated septum may include nasal irrigation, nasal decongestants, or nasal steroid sprays to alleviate congestion and symptoms. In more severe cases, septoplasty, a surgical procedure to correct the alignment of the nasal septum, may be recommended.
