Dennis Tito is an American engineer and entrepreneur, best known as the world's first space tourist. He was born on August 8, 1940, in Queens, New York. Tito earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Astronautics and Aeronautics from New York University in 1962 and later obtained a Master's degree in Engineering Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1964.
Tito gained worldwide acclaim for his pioneering space travel in 2001 when he became the first non-astronaut to visit space. His mission was facilitated by the Russian Federal Space Agency, as a civilian passenger on a Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS). The journey lasted for nearly 8 days, during which Tito orbited the Earth 128 times.
As an entrepreneur, Tito co-founded the investment firm Wilshire Associates in 1972, which primarily focused on asset management and investment strategies. He served as the CEO of the company until his retirement in 1991. Tito also established several other businesses related to finance, such as the Wilshire Associates Real Estate Group and Wilshire Coinvest LLC.
