Deinoceras is an extinct genus of large rhinoceros-like mammals that lived during the late Eocene and early Oligocene epochs, approximately 35-30 million years ago. It is believed to have belonged to the family Amynodontidae, which were primitive relatives of modern-day rhinoceroses.
The name Deinoceras derives from the Greek words "deinos," meaning terrible or fearsome, and "keras," meaning horn. This name aptly describes the prominent feature of Deinoceras, as it possessed a large and robust horn on its snout. The horn was made up of a bony core covered by a sheath of keratin, much like modern rhinoceros horns.
The morphology of Deinoceras is known from fossil remains including partial skeletons and isolated bones. It had a stocky body, short legs, and a relatively small braincase, indicating that it was likely a slow-moving, herbivorous animal.
