The term "deferent" refers to a type of circular or elliptical path followed by a celestial body, particularly in ancient geocentric models of the universe. In ancient astronomy, it was believed that the Earth was at the center of the universe, and all other celestial bodies, including the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars, revolved around it.
To account for the observed motions of these celestial bodies, astronomers proposed the concept of deferents. A deferent is a fixed circle or ellipse centered on the Earth, around which a celestial body was thought to move. This model attempted to explain the irregular motions, such as retrograde motion, observed by ancient astronomers.
