David Steel is a British politician who served as the leader of the Liberal Party in the United Kingdom from 1976 to 1988. He was born on March 31, 1938, in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. Steel played a significant role in modernizing and restructuring the Liberal Party, helping to establish it as a prominent political force in British politics.
Steel entered the House of Commons in 1965 as the Member of Parliament for Roxburgh, Selkirk, and Peebles. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Liberal Party and became its leader in 1976, at the age of 38.
