Cytochrome c reductase is responsible for transferring electrons from ubiquinol (reduced form of ubiquinone) to cytochrome c, an essential electron carrier protein. This transfer of electrons generates a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial or plasma membrane, which is then utilized by ATP synthase to produce ATP, the energy currency of cells.
The cytochrome c reductase complex consists of multiple subunits, including iron-sulfur proteins, cytochrome b, cytochrome c1, and a Rieske protein. Each subunit has distinct functions, with the iron-sulfur proteins and cytochrome b serving as the main electron carriers, the Rieske protein transferring electrons from ubiquinol to cytochrome c1, and cytochrome c1 transferring electrons to cytochrome c.
Defects or mutations in cytochrome c reductase can impair electron transfer and disrupt ATP production, leading to energy deficiency and various metabolic disorders. Additionally, cytochrome c reductase has been implicated in some age-related diseases and certain types of cancer, highlighting its significance in cellular function and health.
