Curt Flood was an American professional baseball player, born on January 18, 1938, in Houston, Texas, and passed away on January 20, 1997. He was a highly talented center fielder who played the majority of his career for the St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1956 to 1971.
Flood is best known for his courageous activism and his pivotal role in challenging baseball's reserve clause. The reserve clause was a provision in player contracts that bound them to their team until the team decided to trade or release them. In 1969, Flood refused to accept a trade from the Cardinals to the Philadelphia Phillies, citing the violation of his personal rights as a player.
His lawsuit, Flood v. Kuhn, reached the Supreme Court of the United States in 1972. Although Flood did not win the case, his actions catalyzed a movement that eventually led to the abolition of the reserve clause, marking a significant turning point in the history of professional sports labor relations.
