Creeping eruption, also known as cutaneous larva migrans, is a parasitic skin infection caused by hookworm larvae. This condition typically occurs in tropical and subtropical regions, especially in rural areas where sanitation and personal hygiene may be poor.
The infection is acquired when the human skin comes into contact with soil or sand containing the larvae of certain species of hookworms, primarily Ancylostoma braziliense and Ancylostoma caninum. These larvae have the ability to penetrate the skin and migrate within the epidermis, causing the characteristic symptoms.
Creeping eruption typically manifests as an intensely itchy and raised red or serpentine rash, which may develop into winding and widely spreading tracts on the skin.
