The Crab Eating Macaque, scientifically known as Macaca fascicularis, is a species of Old World monkey native to Southeast Asia. It belongs to the genus Macaca, which includes numerous species of primates commonly referred to as macaques.
The Crab Eating Macaque earned its name due to its distinctive diet preference for crabs, which it actively seeks out along coasts, rivers, and mangroves. However, it is an omnivorous creature and also consumes a wide variety of foods, including fruits, leaves, seeds, insects, small vertebrates, and various plant materials.
These macaques are characterized by their medium-sized bodies, typically weighing between 4 and 15 kilograms (8.8-33 pounds), and measuring around 45-60 centimeters (18-24 inches) in length. Their fur coloration varies greatly, ranging from olive-green, brown, or grey on the back to lighter shades on the face, chest, and limbs. Their faces often exhibit a distinctive pink or red tint, especially around the eyes and lower parts of the face.
Crab Eating Macaques are highly adaptable and can be found across a range of habitats, including forests, mangroves, grasslands, and urban areas. They are known for their social behavior, living in hierarchical groups led by dominant males. These groups can contain several females and their offspring. Communication within the group is facilitated through vocalizations, facial expressions, body gestures, and grooming.
While the Crab Eating Macaque is not currently classified as endangered, its population size is gradually declining due to habitat destruction, hunting, and illegal pet trade. Efforts to conserve and protect this species are in progress to ensure its survival in the face of these threats.
