Cotton Top Marmosets, scientifically known as Saguinus oedipus, are small New World primates native to the tropical forests of North-western Colombia. They are considered one of the smallest primates, weighing around 400 grams and measuring approximately 20 centimeters in length. Their name "Cotton Top" refers to the distinctive tuft of long white hair that adorns the crown of their heads, resembling cotton.
With their enchanting appearance and high intelligence, Cotton Top Marmosets have gained popularity both in scientific research and as exotic pets. They possess a slender body structure with grayish to golden fur covering most parts of their body, excluding the characteristic white crown. Sporting long tails, they use their prehensile tail to maintain balance as they leap and jump through the branches in their habitat.
These marmosets are diurnal and arboreal animals, spending their days actively foraging for fruits, nectar, insects, and small vertebrates. Their diet consists of a variety of plant materials, including gums and saps from trees. They possess sharp incisors which they use to create holes in trees to extract sap. The ability to extract gum resin makes them specialists in utilizing their environment's resources.
Cotton Top Marmosets are social animals living in family groups consisting of a monogamous breeding pair and their offspring. They communicate through a wide range of vocalizations, allowing them to establish territories and communicate warnings to other groups. Additionally, they also employ body language and scent marking to convey social messages.
