A conrod, short for connecting rod, is a vital component in internal combustion engines that serves to connect the piston to the crankshaft. It plays a central role in the engine's reciprocating motion, transmitting the force generated by the combustion process from the piston to the crankshaft, ultimately converting linear motion into rotational motion.
Usually made of high-strength steel or aluminum alloy, the conrod consists of a large end and a small end. The large end contains a cylindrical bearing that is attached to the piston with a piston pin, while the small end houses another bearing that connects to the crankshaft journal. These bearings allow the conrod to pivot as the engine operates, enabling the piston to travel up and down within the cylinder.
