Comte De Rochambeau, also known as Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, was a French general who played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. Born in Vendôme, France, in 1725, Rochambeau hailed from a noble family and initially pursued a career in law before entering military service. He inherited the title of Comte (Count) after his father's death and went on to have a successful military career.
Rochambeau is most remembered for his role as the commander-in-chief of the French expeditionary force that aided the American colonies in their fight for independence from Britain. In March 1780, he arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, with an army of around 7,000 troops. Rochambeau's forces, alongside General George Washington's Continental Army, played a vital part in the decisive Battle of Yorktown in 1781, which ultimately led to the surrender of British forces under General Cornwallis.
After the war, Rochambeau returned to France and continued his military career, eventually rising to the rank of Marshal of France in 1791. However, his career took a turn during the French Revolution, as he openly criticized the radical Jacobin government's actions. Rochambeau was imprisoned during the Reign of Terror but managed to escape execution, although his son was not as fortunate.
