Computed Tomographic Colonography, also known as virtual colonoscopy or CT colonography, is a non-invasive medical imaging procedure used to examine the colon and rectum. It combines advanced computed tomography (CT) scanning technology with computer graphics to create detailed images of the inside of the colon, allowing doctors to detect and diagnose conditions such as colorectal cancer, polyps, and other abnormalities.
During a CT colonography, the patient lies on a table that is inserted into a large tube-like CT scanner. The scanner then takes a series of x-ray images from different angles, which are then reconstructed by a computer to create a 3D image of the colon. This virtual image is then thoroughly examined by a radiologist to identify any abnormalities.
CT colonography offers several advantages over traditional colonoscopy, primarily because it is less invasive and does not require the insertion of a colonoscope. Additionally, it eliminates the need for sedation and the associated risks. However, if any polyps or abnormalities are detected during the CT colonography, a traditional colonoscopy may still be necessary to remove them.
While CT colonography is generally well-tolerated by patients, there are some potential risks and limitations. These include exposure to radiation, the possibility of false-positive or false-negative results, and the inability to remove or biopsy any abnormalities found during the procedure. Overall, CT colonography is considered a valuable additional tool in colon cancer screening and detection, offering a less invasive option for some patients.
