Coffee fungus refers to a specific type of fungal infection that affects coffee plants, mainly the species Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora. Also known as "coffee rust" or "Hemileia vastatrix," coffee fungus is considered one of the most devastating diseases affecting coffee crops worldwide.
This contagious fungus attacks the leaves of the coffee plants, appearing as small, yellow-orange powdery spots on the underside of the foliage. As the infection progresses, these spots grow larger and merge together, forming rusty brown or dark lesions. The infection can spread rapidly, leading to defoliation and decreased photosynthetic activity in the coffee plant, eventually causing significant yield losses.
Coffee fungus is capable of surviving in a wide range of climates, but it primarily thrives in warm and humid conditions. It is most prevalent in regions with temperatures ranging from 10 to 30 degrees Celsius and rainfall between 1,500 and 3,000 millimeters annually, making coffee-producing countries vulnerable to its impact.
Efforts to control coffee fungus involve cultural practices, such as pruning infected branches, removing fallen leaves, and protecting the plants from excessive moisture. Additionally, chemical fungicides may be used to prevent and manage the disease, although their effectiveness can decline over time due to the fungus's ability to develop resistance.
