This condition is commonly observed in individuals with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), a condition where the arteries supplying blood to the extremities, such as legs or arms, become narrowed or blocked by atherosclerosis, a buildup of fatty deposits on the arterial walls.
The pain experienced during claudication is often described as a dull ache, heaviness, or a sense of tightness in the affected muscles. It tends to subside shortly after the activity is stopped or during periods of rest when the muscles receive adequate blood flow. Claudication can limit one's ability to engage in physical activities and may significantly affect their quality of life.
Treatment for claudication generally involves managing the underlying cause, such as controlling risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes, and adopting a healthier lifestyle.
