Etymology of CHRISTMAS CARD
The word "Christmas" originated from the Old English word "Cristesmæsse", which means "Christ's Mass". It combines the elements "Cristes" referring to Christ, and "mæsse" which means Mass or feast. The term "Christmas Card" came into use much later. "Card" here refers to a piece of thick, stiff paper or a cardboard. In the mid-19th century, Sir Henry Cole, a British civil servant, had the idea to create a personalized card to send greetings during the Christmas season, as a way to save time writing individual letters. He commissioned artist John Callcott Horsley to design the first Christmas card in 1843. Thus, the term "Christmas Card" was coined to describe these specially created cards for the festive season.
