Choroid plexus tumor is a rare type of brain tumor that originates in the choroid plexus, a network of blood vessels located within the ventricles of the brain. This tumor primarily affects children, occurring most commonly in infants and young children under the age of five.
Choroid plexus tumors are classified as either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). The majority of these tumors are benign, with choroid plexus papillomas being the most common benign variant. Malignant choroid plexus carcinomas are less common but more aggressive and have a higher propensity to spread to other parts of the brain and spinal cord.
Symptoms of a choroid plexus tumor can include hydrocephalus (excessive fluid accumulation in the brain), headaches, nausea, vomiting, vision problems, seizures, and changes in behavior or cognitive function. A diagnosis is typically confirmed through imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans, followed by a biopsy or surgical removal of the tumor for further examination.
Treatment options for choroid plexus tumors include surgical resection, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The specific treatment approach depends on various factors, including the tumor's size, location, type, and the age and overall health of the patient. Prognosis and survival rates vary depending on the tumor's characteristics, with benign tumors having a better prognosis compared to malignant ones.
Ongoing monitoring and follow-up care are necessary to detect possible recurrence or complications associated with choroid plexus tumors.
