Charles the Bald, also known as Charles II, was a prominent figure in European history. He was a monarch who reigned as the King of West Francia from 843 to 877. Born on June 13, 823, he was the third son of the Carolingian emperor Louis the Pious and Judith of Bavaria.
Charles the Bald is known for his prominent role in the Treaty of Verdun in 843, which divided the Carolingian Empire into three separate kingdoms. This treaty granted him rule over West Francia, comprising present-day France. Despite his title, Charles the Bald was not actually bald. "Bald" referred to his lacking in hair but rather pointed to his short hair style, different from the typical long hair of the time.
During his reign, Charles faced numerous challenges, including invasions from Vikings and internal conflicts within his kingdom. Despite this, he is credited with making significant contributions in the political and cultural development of West Francia.
Charles the Bald was a patron of the arts and promoted education, supporting scholars such as John Scotus Eriugena. He also issued the Edict of Pitres, which aimed to control the feudal system and maintain order.
Following his death on October 6, 877, Charles the Bald was succeeded by his son Louis the Stammerer. His reign left a lasting legacy on the political landscape of France and the broader European continent.
